Session: Crystal Ball Seminar – The future for e-security documents and related infrastructure
Speech title: The e-passport’s fifth anniversary - exploring the future
Since 2005, when the first States started issuing e-passports, more than 100 million are now in circulation.
Since this successful introduction, ICAO’s New Technology Working Group (NTWG) and its industry partners from ISO started to reflect on the present and desired future use of e-passports.
These reflections focus on two distinguished areas, Maintenance of the Standard and New Functionalities.
Maintenance of the Standard:
The present e-passport specifications are celebrating their fifth anniversary. The many practical experiences from the past 5 years justify an evaluation of the standard. Also technology evolves and computer power increases continuously. It is a matter of good practice to oversee a horizon of the next 5-10 years, the typical lifetime of a passport, and keep e-passport security up-to-date.
New Functionalities:
Now that the world is getting more and more familiar with the use of e-passports and starts benefiting from the increased security it offers, ICAO’s NTWG has started a study to investigate additional new functionalities that the technology could offer. For instance in the facilitation area.
This presentation goes into the present status and challenges and discusses what to expect in the next 5 years.
